Search and Rescue Aircraft Maintainers Launch Public Awareness Campaign

GANDER, NL – Members of the Union of National Defence Employees (UNDE) local 90120, a Component of the Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC), who are employed by IMP Group International Inc. are launching an awareness campaign in their local community to put pressure on decision makers at IMP Group to bring significant improvements at the bargaining table.

Radio ads will commence on May 4 on VOCM and K-ROCK in Gander, NL and on JACK FM in Halifax, NS where IMP’s head office is located.  Flyers will be delivered by Canada Post to every household and business in the local community of Gander.  The union is also asking members of the general public to demonstrate their support to search and rescue and the workers who deliver that service by engaging in a letter writing campaign to their local Member of Parliament, Scott Simms.

Jeannie Baldwin, Regional Executive Vice-President of PSAC’s Atlantic Region comments on the campaign: “Search and Rescue is a fundamental public service for all Canadians but especially in communities such as Gander.  We are putting pressure on IMP and demanding that they treat their employees with dignity and respect.  We are asking them to put people and lives ahead of corporate greed.  We are also seeking the assistance of the local community to ask their local Member of Parliament to talk sense to the leaders of IMP, because after all, IMP receives funding from the Department of National Defence.”

The collective agreement for the 85 employees who work in Gander, NL and Comox, BC expired on June 30, 2015.  The employer is tabling proposals that would seriously jeopardize the success of search and rescue missions.  The main issues focus around fixing the wage gap, improving sick leave, maintaining the current 40-hour work schedule and fairly assigning the work.

The PSAC members provide valuable work in ensuring that search and rescue aircrafts are well maintained and safe to be used in rescue missions.  Without their work, the safety of the aircrafts and its missions would be in jeopardy.
