Day Five - Friday, August 12
The sun returned for the final day of the conference. A heavy slate of business awaited the delegates: the remaining Finance Resolutions and all of the elections.
The Finance Committee returned to the podium. Resolution 92 calling for UNDE to expend $1,500 each to purchase a computer system for every Local dominated the morning. An amendment was proposed and defeated. Much discussion took place. Finally the question was called and the resolution passed.
Elections highlighted the day. Once again Brother John MacLennan was acclaimed as National President of UNDE. Brother Mark Miller was nominated for the position of Executive Vice-President but declined “this time.” An election for EVP was then held between Sister Mary Chamberlain and Brother Doug Pike. Sister Mary was the winner.
The convention broke up into caucuses to elect their Vice-Presidents. Debbie Graham returned for NL/NB, Doug Pike for Nova Scotia, Philippe Turcq for Quebec, Bob Champoux for NCR, Brian Molsberry for Manitoba/Sask, Daniel Verreault for PSP and Garry Robinson for BC. The following new officers were welcomed – Debbie Nadeau for Ontario, Drew Smeaton for CSE, Marie Kennedy for Alberta/North and Brenda Moore as EE Advisor.
The Finance Committee finished off their resolutions. It was agreed that the projected surplus would be used to offset the projected deficit thus leaving a dues neutral budget that was overwhelmingly passed. Bylaws came back to report on an emergency resolution (National Executive Recommendation # 1) to give the EE Advisor vote along with voice. The Committee ruled it out of order since it had already been dealt with earlier. A Motion to Reconsider did not garner the required two thirds majority. Motion defeated and Convention 2005 officially over.
