Background. The DND Scholarship Program was derived from the La Releve Program. Since the scholarship program's inception in 1999, a total of 58 scholarships have been awarded to civilian employees across the department and across the country. And permanent funding has now been budgeted to the tune of $600K annually which will enable the program to continue.
I am happy to report that it was another successful year for the members. A total of 93 applications - an increase from the previous application year - were reviewed and rated. I felt like a Olympian Judge! The committee has moved into the technical age with the means for electronic voting.
(Powerpoint slides show the breakdown of applicants and the demographics)
As in past years, we depleted the funds allocated to the program by granting more than the prerequisite number of scholarships. If nothing changes from a financial perspective since the deliberations, we agreed as a committee to grant 15 scholarships for the 2003/2004 school year.
The Department will announce the winners within the coming weeks, usually before the end of June 2003. And all applicants will receive feedback from DGLDP.
As the only remaining member of the original 1999 selection committee, I have enjoyed my five opportunities to participate in the selection process and look forward to representing UNDE members next year. Questions and comments welcomed.
Fraternally,
Submitted electronically,
Mary L. Chamberlain
